North Sioux City News - Issue 1

Your official source for city news and updates

From the Mayor’s Office

We’re kicking off the first issue of our city newsletter with a message from Mayor Chris Bogenrief. In his latest North Sioux City Times column, he shares thoughts on transparency, community engagement, and upcoming priorities for North Sioux City.

Trivia & Tidbits

Did You Know? North Sioux City’s first official post office, known as Big Sioux, operated from 1865 to 1873. It was likely located in Postmaster Christopher Maloney’s cabin near the area of Lakeshore Drive and Alcoma Drive on the east side of McCook Lake.

Community Spotlight

Meet Julie Burhoop - architect, community advocate, and one of North Sioux City’s newly elected commissioners. Since moving here in 2004, Julie has poured her energy into making this community a better place, from serving on the City’s Planning & Zoning Committee to helping the McCook Lake Association as VP of Communications.

When she’s not tackling city challenges or working behind the scenes in her husband Craig’s business, you might find Julie reminiscing about days on the lake with her daughters or grabbing a bite at Beano & Sherry’s. To her, North Sioux City isn’t just a place - it’s home. As commissioner, she’s committed to helping make our community whole again.

Know someone who's making a positive difference in North Sioux City? Whether it’s a neighbor, local volunteer, business owner, or city staff member, we’d love to highlight them in a future issue. Send your nomination to [email protected] with a few sentences about who they are and why they should be featured!

The fund will be rolled out in phases as soon as possible to support those impacted. We’re committed to doing all we can to help our neighbors move forward, and we’ll share more details as they become available.

🌊 McCook Lake Cleanup Update: The South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks (SDGFP) cleanup project is currently underway. The first sediment peninsula has been removed, and work is wrapping up on the second. Inside Economic Development

Did you know? The North Sioux City Economic Development Corporation (NSCEDC) is a non-profit organization working to strengthen our local economy by supporting existing businesses, attracting new opportunities, and encouraging strategic growth that benefits residents. Their efforts also include advancing workforce housing, improving infrastructure, and enhancing quality of life in our area.

While flood recovery remains a critical focus for the City, the NSCEDC is also working alongside other efforts to help guide North Sioux City’s long-term vision. You can support that planning by taking a few minutes to complete the Comprehensive Plan Survey. TAKE THE SURVEY BEFORE JUNE 13 →
