TRIVIA & TIDBITS

Did you know? As part of the City’s Comprehensive Plan, key data was analyzed to guide future planning:

  • 20% population growth from 2010 to 2020, faster than both Union County and the state.

  • Median age: 34 years old, younger than both the county and state overall.

  • 4,278 jobs across 269 establishments, reflecting a strong local economy.

These numbers help guide decisions about housing, infrastructure, services, and economic development as North Sioux City continues to evolve.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

This month, we’re recognizing Liane Welte, Library Director, as she prepares to retire after 10 years of service to North Sioux City. During her time with the City, Liane has helped ensure the library remains a trusted source of information and a welcoming space for connection, serving residents at every stage of life while adapting to the community’s evolving needs. Her leadership has played an important role in keeping the library a steady, valued part of the community.

When asked what she enjoys most, Liane shared that it is the small, everyday moments. From conversations with residents to seeing a child excited about a book, those moments make the work meaningful. And her favorite spot in North Sioux City? The library, of course. It is where some of her favorite people gather. Thank you, Liane, for your dedication to our community over the past 10 years. Wishing you all the best in your retirement!

INSIDE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Continuing a Local Legacy: In February 2026, John and Katie Hurtado became the new owners of Rubber Dockie, a North Sioux City-based business founded by Jamie Wankum that offers water mats and inflatables. For Katie, the story feels full circle. She grew up spending time at McCook Lake before moving away for college and later to California. Now, she and her husband, John, have returned to the area to build their future and grow a business rooted in connection and community. With Jamie continuing on as a mentor and advisor, the Hurtados are focused on carrying forward the foundation he built while also honoring Katie’s family legacy as a local small business owner.

Their “why” is simple. Some of life’s best memories are made on the water, and they want to help create more of those moments for others. They are excited to grow the business locally and look forward to getting involved and giving back to the community.
