Trivia & TidbitsDid You Know? Before becoming North Sioux City, our community was known as Stevens. From 1923 to 1952, the Stevens post office served the town until the name officially changed. Life in Stevens included the Farmers Sales Yard, and businesses like Miller’s Liquor (sound familiar?), Stevens Tavern, a café known for southern fried chicken, and a custom furniture shop. Flood Recovery Updates
🏠 Homeowner Recovery Program - Phase 1: North Sioux City has launched Phase 1 of the Homeowner Recovery Program for residents hardest hit by the 2024 flood. This voluntary program focuses on potential property acquisitions to support long-term recovery and future resilience efforts. Letters and interest forms were recently sent to eligible property owners, and the City is reviewing responses as planning moves forward. We remain committed to helping our community rebuild and prepare for the future.
🏛️ State Leaders Visit Flood Recovery Area: A few weeks ago, about ten South Dakota state legislators visited North Sioux City and McCook Lake to tour the hardest hit area from last year’s flood and hear directly from residents about ongoing challenges. The visit was led by our local legislators, Senator Sydney Davis and Representatives Chris Kassin and Bill Shorma, who helped bring attention to our community’s needs and open the door for future discussions on support and disaster planning. Community Reminders & Updates
🌿 Mowing Reminder: When mowing, aim grass clippings into your yard, not the street. Clippings on roads create safety hazards and drainage issues. Thanks for helping keep North Sioux City clean and safe!
🦟 Mosquito Update: City crews sprayed for mosquitoes last week to help reduce summer pests. While spraying helps, it’s still important to dump standing water around your property to prevent breeding. Let’s keep summer comfortable for everyone!
🌧️ River Levels & Local Rainfall: With all the recent rain, you might be curious about river levels or local rainfall totals. Explore these local tools for real-time updates: Local River Levels & Info and Community Rain Gauges & Weather.
