Your official source for city news and updates

From the Mayor’s Office

We hope you’re finding ways to enjoy your summer even with the recent heat and humidity. It’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed since the new commission took office in May. As your mayor, I want you to know we remain committed to clear communication and working together to make North Sioux City a welcoming and forward-thinking community. As summer winds down and the new school year approaches, I’ll be sharing more updates on the work ahead and how we’re continuing to move our city forward. Stay cool, stay connected and thank you again for your support.
-Mayor Chris Bogenrief

Trivia & Tidbits

Did you know McCook Lake was once home to a popular dance hall and supper club? In the 1940s and ’50s, the Lake Shore Inn was the place to be on a Saturday night. Located on the south end of McCook Lake, it drew locals and visitors alike for steak dinners, southern-style barbecue ribs, and live music. Guests could “dine and dance” the night away, no cover charge required. The Inn even offered bathing access!

Community Spotlight

Cory coaching his son.

Meet Cory Carter  –  If you’ve been to a Dakota Valley baseball game in the past two decades, chances are you’ve seen Cory coaching on the field. For 21 years, he’s helped shape the lives of student-athletes through his dedication to the DV baseball program. Cory has lived in North Sioux City since he was a young boy and still calls the same street home with his wife and three children. He also served over 15 years on the Recreation Board and delivers mail part-time on the side for the local post office. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, hunting, and being with family and friends. Thank you, Cory, for your years of service, leadership, and dedication to making a positive impact in North Sioux City

Flood Recovery Updates

🚧 Penrose Drive & DV Elementary Parking Lot: Due to recent weather delays, the reopening of Penrose Drive has been pushed back from August 8 to August 15. Crews are continuing work, and progress is being made each day. As part of this effort, repairs to the Dakota Valley Elementary School parking lot are also wrapping up and may be complete by the time this update reaches you. We appreciate your continued patience as these recovery efforts move forward.

🏠 Homeowner Recovery Program - Phase 1 Update: Phase 1 of the Homeowner Recovery Program is underway, focusing on voluntary property acquisitions for North Sioux City residents whose homes were completely destroyed in the 2024 flood. This initial phase supports long-term recovery and future flood resilience. We are actively collecting interest forms through August 14. If this applies to you and you did not receive a form, please contact City Hall at 605-232-4276.

🛣️Northshore Drive Reconstruction: The City is preparing to move forward with reconstruction of Northshore Drive, restoring it to pre-flood condition. To do this, we will begin collecting easements from homeowners along the route. This is a standard and necessary step in the process and cooperation from property owners will help avoid further delays and ensure the project stays on track.

Community Reminders & Updates

💧 Water Quality Update: City staff have been working at both water treatment plants to manage recent changes in chlorine levels. A well switch at the River Dr. Plant briefly raised levels, but the system has been recalibrated and is returning to normal. At the Streeter Dr. Plant slight fluctuations are expected as the new expansion comes online. All chlorine levels remain well within the state’s safe range of 0.3 to 4.0.

⚠️ Speed Limit Reminder on Northshore Drive: A temporary 15 MPH speed limit remains in place on Northshore Drive for the safety of both drivers and construction crews. Please slow down and drive with care in this active construction area.

📆 Upcoming Commission Meeting: The next City Commission meeting will be held on Monday, August 4th at 6:00 PM at City Hall. Can’t attend in person? Watch it live or catch the replay on our YouTube channel.
