There’s a lot happening across North Sioux City as we head into August, and this month’s newsletter is a good way to catch up on what’s happening and what’s ahead. Inside, you’ll find the latest on Union Crossing and our ongoing flood recovery efforts, along with details on National Night Out, the new dog park (help us name it!), upcoming community events, and more. You’ll also get to know a City employee who has been helping residents and our community for nearly 19 years. Join the North Sioux City Police Department and North Sioux City Fire Department for our annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the North Sioux City Community Library, 601 River Drive. This free, all-ages event brings neighbors and first responders together for an evening of fun while building positive relationships within our community.

Bring your swimsuit and cool off on the water slides, check out police, fire, and emergency vehicles, and enjoy free hamburgers and hot dogs served by local police officers and firefighters. There will also be snow cones from Rainbow Snow, drinks from J's Nutrition, and pop donated by Coca-Cola. The Library will join the fun with face painting, balloons, and more.

The Police Department will be giving away T-shirts, small balls, and frisbees while supplies last. Everything is free, so bring the family and come enjoy a fun summer evening with your neighbors and local first responders!

🐾 Help Name the New Dog Park: The North Sioux City Parks Board is looking for your ideas to help name the city's brand-new dog park! The Parks Board will select the winning name, which will be announced at the final Ice Cream Social of the summer on August 12. Click here to submit your dog park name idea by August 5.

🍦 Final Ice Cream Social of the Summer: Join the Parks Board on Wednesday, August 12, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. for the final Ice Cream Social of the summer, held at the brand-new dog park on Streeter Drive. Parking will be available at the City Water Treatment Plant (300 Streeter Drive). Come check out the new park, enjoy some ice cream, and connect with neighbors!

🎀 Union Crossing Development Ribbon Cutting: Join us Thursday, August 6, at noon to celebrate the Union Crossing development with a ribbon cutting. Parking will be available along Union Crossing Street and Liverpool Lane, with the opportunity to tour select units following the ceremony. Learn more about the development at UnionCrossingSD.com.

🌱 Property Maintenance Reminder: As summer continues, residents are reminded to keep properties maintained in accordance with City ordinances. Weeds and grass should not exceed 7 inches on planted properties or 10 inches on unplatted properties, and noxious weeds are prohibited. Properties should also be kept free of accumulated dead branches, twigs, leaves, grass, and other dead vegetation except when contained in an enclosed compost bin.

This month, we're recognizing Jennifer Roupe, Finance Assistant for the City of North Sioux City. Jennifer has been part of the City team for nearly 19 years, assisting residents and supporting a wide range of day-to-day City operations.
Her role includes everything from utility billing and helping explain City ordinances to assisting residents with questions and issues. She also lends a hand with community events throughout the year, including the Library's summer kickoff, National Night Out, and Trunk-or-Treat.

One of Jennifer's favorite parts of working for the City is being involved in so many different aspects of the community. Having lived in North Sioux City for more than 20 years, she especially appreciates its small-town feel and locally owned businesses. She also enjoys spending time on the bike trail and at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve.

After nearly two decades at City Hall, it's the people and relationships that stand out most to Jennifer. "I have made some lifelong friends over the years. Never a dull moment. You never know what the day has in store."

Thank you, Jennifer, for nearly 19 years of service and for all you do to help residents, support community events, and keep North Sioux City running each day!

🚧 Northshore Drive Reconstruction: Significant progress continues as the Northshore Drive Reconstruction Project moves closer to completion. Recent work included storm sewer installation, a water main adjustment, concrete block mat installation, and ongoing private utility relocations. Crews will continue utility and subgrade work throughout the project area, including final storm sewer installations, water main protection, hydrant work, and cement subgrade stabilization. Paving crews are also expected to fully mobilize and begin preparing the roadway for mainline paving. Northshore Drive remains closed to through traffic as construction continues. 🌊 Lower Big Sioux River Flood Risk Management Study: The City Commission approved committing up to $375,000 over the next three years toward North Sioux City’s share of the non-federal cost of the Lower Big Sioux River Flood Risk Management Study. The study is part of ongoing efforts to better understand and address future flood risks along the Lower Big Sioux River.

🏘️ McCook Lake Flood Recovery: The City is establishing Tax Increment Finance District #6 (TIF #6) in the McCook Lake flood-impacted area to help generate funding for a future Phase 2 Flood Recovery Assistance Program, support reinvestment, and rebuild the local tax base. More details about the recovery program will be shared as they become available.

Union Crossing Update: Development continues at Union Crossing, with new homes under construction, additional lots under contract, and the first residents moving into the Prairie Dunes apartments. In Phase 1A, 30 single-family lots and 28 multi-family units have been sold or are under contract. Approximately 22 single-family homes, townhomes, and duplex units are currently under construction or anticipated to begin construction by August. Prairie Dunes has also welcomed its first residents, with five of the first six apartments already rented and additional units expected to become available for September move-ins.

Another summer of reading, learning, and fun is winding down at the North Sioux City Community Library! The Summer Reading Program has kept readers busy checking out books throughout the summer, and it has been great to see so many families and community members take part in the Library’s special events and activities. To help celebrate the end of a successful summer, the Library is joining the fun at National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Library (601 River Drive). Stop by for face painting, balloons, and more as part of this free, all-ages community event!

New at the Library! Young readers can now check out Wonderbooks, which combine a print book with a ready-to-play audiobook built right in. Kids can listen as the book is read aloud, then switch to Learning Mode for questions and conversation about the story. Stop by the Library to check one out!

Answer: More than 900! The North Sioux City Fire Department responds to more than 900 emergency calls each year. Its firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics respond to everything from fires and medical emergencies to vehicle accidents, rescues, and more. Operating from two stations, the department serves approximately 8,000 residents across the Dakota Valley Emergency Services District, with that population growing to nearly 15,000 during the day.
