Summer is in full swing in North Sioux City, and there’s plenty happening across the community. In his latest Dakota Dunes / North Sioux City Times column, Mayor Chris Bogenrief shares updates on new community amenities, local events, recent accomplishments, and the people who continue to make North Sioux City a great place to call home.

As part of this year's celebration of America's 250th anniversary, the North Sioux City Economic Development Corporation and the City of North Sioux City are proud to partner with Zort's Fireworks and Lindblom Services to help sponsor a FREE Fireworks Show on Saturday, June 27.

Food trucks begin serving at 7:00 p.m., with fireworks at dark, approximately 9:30-10:00 p.m. The event will take place at 200 N. Merrill Avenue in the lot south of the CNOS Fieldhouse. Residents are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets or enjoy the drive-in style event.

🎆 Fireworks Reminder: Fireworks may be discharged within North Sioux City city limits from 7:00 a.m. to 12:01 a.m. daily between June 27 and July 5. Fireworks are not permitted on city streets, parks, or other city-owned property unless specifically authorized. Click HERE for complete fireworks regulations.

🚲 Trail Connection Complete: The new pedestrian trail connecting North Sioux City and Dakota Dunes is now complete and open for use. The connection provides residents with direct access to the Dakota Dunes and Sioux City trail systems, creating even more opportunities to walk, run, and bike throughout the region.

🍦 Ice Cream Social at Stevens Park: The Parks Board's Summer Ice Cream Social Series continues on Tuesday, July 14, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Park (119 Parkside Avenue). Enjoy a summer evening in the park, connect with neighbors, and learn more about local parks and recreation opportunities.

🐕 Dog Park Construction Underway: Construction has now begun on North Sioux City's first dedicated dog park on Streeter Drive, just south of the water treatment plant. The project is expected to be completed later this summer, creating a new space for residents and their dogs to enjoy.

This month, we're recognizing Terri Pace, Library Assistant at the North Sioux City Community Library. Over the past eight years, Terri has helped support the day-to-day operations of the library and many of the programs that local families know and enjoy, including Story Time, Lego Club, and other youth activities.

One of Terri's favorite parts of her job has been helping create opportunities for learning and discovery. Through library programs, she has helped foster early literacy, encourage a love of reading, and provide a welcoming space for children and families in our community. When she's not at the library, Terri enjoys spending time at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve, one of her favorite local places to get outdoors and enjoy nature.

As Terri prepares to retire on July 2, she reflects most fondly on the relationships she has built over the years. "I greatly enjoyed serving the library's patrons, many of whom became dear friends over the years…some even like family."

Thank you, Terri, for your eight years of dedicated service to the North Sioux City Community Library and the countless residents and families you've impacted along the way. We wish you all the best in your retirement!

🛣️ Northshore Drive Reconstruction: Utility work continues on Phase 1 of the project between Penrose Drive and Leisure Lane, with completion of those improvements expected by July 4. Crews are also progressing on grading work in Phase 2 and preparing the roadway for future paving. The project remains on track to reopen Northshore Drive before the start of the school year. 🏗️ Lot Grading Continues: Lieber Construction was recently awarded the next phase of grading work on city-owned properties acquired following the 2024 flood. Work is expected to resume in the coming weeks after the relocation of several surplus garages.

🚤 Public Boat Ramp Fully Operational: With water levels now high enough at McCook Lake, the public boat ramp is fully operational. Daily permits are $20, and seasonal permits are available for $60.

Summer Reading is in full swing at the North Sioux City Community Library! Readers of all ages can continue logging books and redeeming prizes throughout the summer while taking part in a variety of free programs and activities.

Upcoming events include the Great Puzzle Race on June 18, a Babysitting Clinic on June 25, "Digging Into the Past" on June 30, the Absolute Science Foam Cannon Event on July 8, and Community Helpers Storytime with the North Sioux City Police Department on July 21. As summer activities continue, be sure to stop in and thank Library Assistant Terri Pace for her eight years of service to the North Sioux City Community Library as she prepares for retirement on July 2. We also encourage residents to introduce themselves to new Library Director Hannah Mosterd, who recently joined the library team.

Summer is one of the busiest times of year for several long-standing North Sioux City businesses: our local fireworks retailers. For generations, these businesses have welcomed visitors from across the region while contributing to the local economy and helping families celebrate Independence Day traditions.

Lantis Fireworks, established in 1945, is one of the area's longest-standing fireworks retailers. Zort's Power Source Fireworks has been serving customers since 1972, while American Fireworks is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Together, these locally operated businesses represent more than 130 years of combined service and remain an important part of North Sioux City's summer season.

How old is North Sioux City? North Sioux City was incorporated in 1951, making the city 75 years old this year!
