NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

Summer Recreation Program for Dakota Valley Area Youth: The City of North Sioux City is excited to launch a new Summer Recreation Program for youth ages 7 - 12 living within the Dakota Valley School District area. In partnership with Siouxland Sports Academy, the program will offer sports, arts and crafts, and team-building activities designed to encourage creativity, character development, and physical activity.
The program will be held on select dates in June from 9:00 - 11:30 AM at the CNOS Fieldhouse (300 Centennial Dr, North Sioux City). Participation is free, and each registered child will receive a free program t-shirt. Space is limited to 90 participants.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT

This month, we’re recognizing Rusty Montagne, North Sioux City’s Public Works Superintendent, who has served the City for 21 years. A lifelong resident of North Sioux City, Rusty plays a key role in keeping the City’s essential infrastructure running behind the scenes - from maintaining wells and keeping the water tower full to ensuring sewer pumps operate every day. As he puts it, much of the work happens “out of sight, out of mind,” but it keeps the community functioning 365 days a year.
Rusty says one of the things he enjoys most about the job is working with the public and helping the community. When he’s not on the job, you might find him walking at the Adams Nature Preserve, working out at Four Seasons, or racing at Park Jefferson Speedway. Thank you, Rusty, for more than two decades of dedication to North Sioux City!
FLOOD RECOVERY UPDATES
🛣️ Northshore Drive Reconstruction: Bid results for the Northshore Drive reconstruction project were presented, with 11 bids received. The low bid was submitted by Reede Construction of Aberdeen in the amount of $3,774,806.67. Work is expected to begin April 1, and a road closure schedule will be shared once contracts are finalized and a preconstruction meeting is held.
🏘️ Lot Grading & Stabilization: A grading plan for the City’s 16 acquired flood-impacted lots was presented to the City Commission earlier this month. Phase 1 is expected to begin in April on Northshore lots 85, 87, 89, and 93, with work focused on improving topography, drainage, and shoreline stabilization. Additional projects will be bid as the broader Northshore Dr. Reconstruction project allows.
🌊 Regional Flood Mitigation Study: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin a General Investigation study of the 2024 flood in the lower Big Sioux Basin at the request of Union County, North Sioux City, Dakota Dunes, and the City of Sioux City. The initial scoping phase is fully funded and set to begin this spring, launching a longer-term process to evaluate potential mitigation options aimed at reducing future flood damage in the region.
LIBRARY CORNER

Library Director Transition: After 10 years of dedicated service, Library Director Liane Welte has announced her retirement effective at the end of May. We thank Liane for her leadership and the care she has brought to the North Sioux City Community Library over the past decade.
As the City prepares for this transition, North Sioux City is now seeking applicants for the next Library Director to lead daily library operations, staff, programming, collections, and community partnerships while continuing the library’s role as a welcoming space for learning and connection.
