As the June 2 election approaches, Mayor Chris Bogenrief shares a reminder that strong communities are built by residents who choose to participate by voting, staying informed, and getting involved beyond Election Day. In his latest column, he highlights why local engagement matters and how every voice plays a role in shaping North Sioux City.

Did you know? Election Day is Tuesday, June 2. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the North Sioux City Community Center (205 Sodrac Drive), with local, county, and state races on the ballot. Absentee voting is also available through June 1, Monday - Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Union County Auditor’s Office in Elk Point. Make a plan to vote and have your voice heard.

This month, we’re recognizing Chief Rich Headid, who has served the North Sioux City Police Department for more than 31 years. During that time, he has helped protect and serve the community while building strong relationships with the residents, businesses, and city staff who make North Sioux City feel like home.

For Chief Headid, one of the most meaningful parts of the job is being able to help someone when they need it most. He also values the close-knit nature of the community, where city employees and residents know each other, support each other, and work together.

Some of his favorite moments come from community policing events like National Night Out, where he has been involved since the event first began in North Sioux City. He also shared how proud he was to see the community come together after the 2024 flood, and he looks forward to continuing to serve North Sioux City for years to come.

🛣️ Northshore Drive Reconstruction: Grading and utility work continue as the project moves forward, including increased capacity storm sewer system, water and sewer adjustments, and new services to lots along Northshore Drive. The closure area for residents has shifted to the west of Penrose Drive to the east side of the Elementary School driveway. Access will be maintained for residents along Northshore and Penrose by a temporary gravel access path. View project updates →

💧 Flood Mitigation Funding: The City is applying for CDBG-DR funding to help support the local match for the Corps of Engineers Lower Big Sioux River Flood Mitigation Study, which will look at recent flooding and identify future mitigation solutions. Additional applications focus on strengthening infrastructure, including lift station improvements and support for the Northshore Bypass Project to improve access and utility redundancy.

🌊 McCook Lake Update: Pumping operations are back at full capacity following a temporary pause coordinated with the City during the Northshore Drive Reconstruction project. The public boat ramp is open, but water levels are not expected to reach target level for another 3-4 weeks. Please use standard low-water boating precautions and stay aware while on the lake.

Summer Reading Begins + Library Updates: The Library’s Summer Reading Program begins June 1 and includes a reading challenge, prizes, activities, and events throughout the summer. Stop by the library to pick up a calendar or visit their Facebook page to see all of the fun things planned!

The library is also seeing a few staffing updates this summer. Hannah Mosterd will begin as Library Director on June 1 and may already be a familiar face to many from her time as a 7th-grade reading teacher at Dakota Valley. MJ Meiers joined the library in March as Assistant Director after previously working at the South Sioux City Library. Terri Pace will retire on July 3, with her final two story times scheduled for June 9 and June 23.

One more date to note: the library will host a babysitter clinic on June 25 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Call or stop by the library to sign up.

🚶 Trail Connection Almost Complete: The new pedestrian trail connecting North Sioux City and Dakota Dunes is expected to be finished by mid-June. Once complete, it will connect residents to trails in Dakota Dunes and Sioux City via the new Big Sioux River bridge.

🐾 Dog Park Approved: North Sioux City’s first dedicated dog park was approved by the City Commission on May 4. The park is planned for Streeter Drive, just south of the water treatment plant, with construction expected to begin in June and finish by August. The long-term goal is to add more dog park spaces in the future.

🍦 Ice Cream Social at Centennial Park: Join the Parks Board for the first ice cream social of the summer on Thursday, June 4, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Centennial Park, located at 301 Military Road. Stop by to meet your neighbors, enjoy the park, and learn more from Parks Board members.

Planning for Growth: Several long-term planning efforts are moving forward to help guide North Sioux City’s future growth. The Housing & Redevelopment Commission recently initiated an updated housing study with Augustana University to identify remaining housing gaps, better understand future needs, and support strategies for affordability, workforce housing, and sustainable growth.

The City’s Comprehensive Plan continues through the review and approval process, with next steps scheduled for the May 27 Planning & Zoning Commission meeting and the June 1 City Commission meeting. This plan helps guide decisions around land use, housing, transportation, infrastructure, and community development.

Staff is also updating design standards and zoning ordinances to make them more modern, user-friendly, and efficient, with updates anticipated by Fall 2026.
